Matrix Video

For some pieces on this website, a video is included showing the tones in the matrix as they are being played. One can see the chords moving from left to right and back. You can also see at which points the music sounds bad, or ought to do so, according to popular just intonation knowledge. That includes the following cases.

  1. A minor third with the non ideal pitch ratio 32/27. It shows up as two tones three columns apart in the same row. For instance:
    GE
  2. A syntonic comma. Occasionally you may see a yellow square popping up. That signals a syntonic comma coming up; a red square marks where it lands. Syntonic commas are only signalled when there is less than half a second between the two tones. That is an arbitrary interval obviously; syntonic commas may irritate with longer time intervals between the two tones.
    C
    C
  3. A perfect fifth (most often melodic) with the non ideal pitch ratio 40/27. It shows up as two tones three columns apart and one row apart. For instance:
    G
    C
